The Root of Thinking

Every domain of human thought — mathematics, language, social reasoning, spatial navigation — hinges on the same fundamental cognitive operation: the construction and traversal of relational networks.

We don't think in isolated concepts. The word "heavy" is rooted in sensation — the strain of muscles, the pull of gravity — but what makes it a concept you can reason with is its web of connections: opposite of "light," applicable to physical objects but also to emotions, to decisions, to music. It sits at a node in a vast graph, connected by edges carrying relational attributes — "opposite of," "more than," "associated with," "causes." Experience grounds a concept; the relational network is what gives it meaning.

This insight comes from decades of work in Relational Frame Theory, but its implications extend well beyond the academic literature. If relational networks are the substrate of thought, then the ability to construct and navigate them isn't just one cognitive skill among many — it may be the most foundational one.

A Multi-Dimensional Graph

Consider the sentence: "The earthquake happened before the tsunami, and was less powerful, but caused it."

To understand this sentence, your mind is simultaneously processing relationships across at least three independent dimensions:

  • Temporal: The earthquake came before the tsunami.
  • Comparative: The earthquake was less than the tsunami in power.
  • Causal: The earthquake led to the tsunami.

Each dimension represents a distinct domain of relationships. Temporal relations (before, after, simultaneous), comparative relations (more, less, equal), spatial relations (above, below, inside), causal relations (because, leads to) — these operate as parallel layers in the same network.

Most of the time, we navigate all of this with nothing more than simple directional connections: A is before B, B is greater than C, X is the same as Y. One-way and two-way links, carrying relational signs. This is the elegant simplicity at the heart of the system — a small set of fundamental relationship types, composed across multiple dimensions, generating the full complexity of human understanding.

The theoretical complexity of these networks is staggering. As cognitive scientist Dermot Barnes-Holmes has observed, the potential permutations of relational networks can easily exceed the number of atoms in the universe. Yet we navigate this space fluently, every waking moment, without breaking a sweat.

How?

Two Modes of Cognition

The answer lies in a dual-process architecture.

Computation Mode. When you encounter something genuinely novel — a complex argument, an unfamiliar problem, a story with an unexpected twist — you actively derive new relationships. You map unknown concepts onto your existing network, compute implications, test whether conclusions follow from premises. This is deliberate, effortful, and slow. It's the feeling of working something out.

Prediction Mode. For everything familiar, you rely on deep, pre-computed patterns. Understanding is immediate and intuitive. Your brain doesn't re-derive the meaning of "the cat sat on the mat" from first principles every time — it pattern-matches against established relational structures, predicting meaning before you've consciously processed it. This is fast, automatic, and feels effortless.

The critical insight is how these two modes interact. The relations you actively compute don't stay effortful forever — the ones you engage with repeatedly consolidate into the predictive architecture. Today's effortful derivation, reinforced through practice, becomes tomorrow's instant intuition. What was consciously built during computation is gradually absorbed into the deep structure your brain uses to navigate the world without thinking.

This cycle never stops. It's the engine of learning itself.

Intelligence, Reframed

This dual-process model maps cleanly onto one of the most well-established distinctions in cognitive science: fluid and crystallized intelligence.

Fluid intelligence — the ability to reason through novel problems, to think flexibly in unfamiliar territory — is the Computation Mode. It's your capacity to actively construct and traverse new relational networks.

Crystallized intelligence — accumulated knowledge, expertise, the vast store of things you "just know" — is the Prediction Mode. It's the deep, consolidated architecture of relational networks you've built over a lifetime.

This mapping reveals something important about development. Children with stronger relational computation abilities don't just perform better on novel problems — they tend to build richer, more organized predictive networks over time. A more powerful computation engine constructs higher-quality crystallized knowledge, which in turn provides a better foundation for future computation. The effect compounds. Children who begin with stronger relational processing don't just have a slight edge — the advantage multiplies over a lifetime of network construction.

The question is whether this machinery is fixed — or whether it can be trained.

Why Most Cognitive Training Fails

If relational ability is the root of thinking, you'd expect that training it would produce broad cognitive gains. And you'd be right — but only if you train it correctly. Most programs don't.

The problem is subtle. Consider learning chess, mastering a video game, or studying a specific school subject. These activities do build relational networks — they construct rich, interconnected webs of domain-specific knowledge. A chess player develops an expansive network of positional relationships; a history student builds temporal and causal networks across events and eras.

But this is fundamentally different from training the underlying cognitive machinery that builds those networks.

Domain-specific training strengthens specific regions of the graph. It makes particular pathways faster and richer. What it doesn't do is enhance the general capacity to compute new relationships — to derive, construct, and traverse novel relational structures regardless of domain.

Many reasoning training programs fail for precisely this reason. They either rely too heavily on established knowledge (engaging the Prediction Mode rather than the Computation Mode), or they build networks that are too specific to transfer. You get better at the training task and little else.

Why SMART Works

The SMART program (Strengthening Mental Abilities through Relational Training) takes a fundamentally different approach — and the results reflect it. Controlled studies have demonstrated significant improvements in measured IQ, reading comprehension, mathematical ability, and overall scholastic performance.

What makes it different? Three design choices that specifically target the Computation Mode at its most foundational level:

Abstract stimuli. SMART doesn't use familiar examples. Instead of reasoning about whether "hot" and "cold" are opposites (which you already know), you encounter problems like this:

HUF is same as JAF

Is JAF opposite of CIC?

You can't rely on prior knowledge about CIC or PEZ. You must engage the pure relational logic — actively computing the network from the given premises, traversing it, and deriving the answer. There's nowhere to hide in prediction; the Computation Mode is forced online.

Multiple Exemplar Training. By presenting vast numbers of varied abstract problems with immediate feedback after each attempt, learners encounter the same relational patterns across hundreds of different configurations. When you're wrong, you see the correct answer immediately. This constant calibration through varied practice is what drives genuine relational skill — not rote memorization of specific patterns, but flexible mastery of the underlying operations.

Mastery Learning. SMART demands fluency, not familiarity. Participants must achieve long streaks of consecutive correct answers — often 32 in a row in the original studies — under timed conditions before advancing to more complex relational structures. You don't move on until the skill is automatic. This is mastery learning in its most rigorous form.

This methodology resonates directly with Benjamin Bloom's famous 2 Sigma Problem: his research showed that students receiving one-on-one tutoring with mastery learning performed two standard deviations better than traditional classroom students — a massive, almost hard-to-believe effect size. SMART operationalizes the core elements of this approach: it demands mastery, provides constant individualized feedback, and scales difficulty to the learner. But it applies these proven pedagogical principles to the most foundational cognitive skill there is.

The result is what you'd predict from the theory: training the root produces widespread gains. Not because the training content transfers — abstract nonsense syllables don't teach you reading or math — but because the capacity to compute relational networks transfers. The engine gets stronger, and everything that runs on that engine improves.

This is where the developmental observation from earlier becomes actionable. If relational computation can be trained — and SMART's evidence suggests it can — then the compounding effect we noted isn't just a passive correlation. It becomes an intervention point. Strengthening the computation engine early, before most crystallized networks are built, doesn't just produce immediate gains on fluid tasks. It changes the trajectory — improving the quality of every network the child constructs from that point forward. The earlier the engine is strengthened, the more it compounds.

Training the Engine

If there is a single root to human thinking and language, the ability to understand and traverse relational networks is the strongest candidate. It's the operation that underlies reading comprehension, mathematical reasoning, logical deduction, analogical thinking, and even social cognition.

This has a practical implication: the most efficient path to broad cognitive enhancement isn't training any specific domain. It's training the relational machinery itself — directly, rigorously, and with abstract materials that force genuine computation rather than allowing retreat into familiar predictions.
